SciFi Novella Review: The Alaska Escape by K.B. Spangler

The Alaska Escape by K.B. Spangler

The Alaska Escape is the third in a serious of stand-alone "smutty" (author's words, not mine!) novellas by author K.B. Spangler, featuring a character from her webcomic, A Girl and her Fed (which can be found here).  The webcomic, and the Rachel Peng novel series which I've also reviewed on this blog, feature a world where 500 top government employees were made into cyborgs with the mental ability to break into basically every computer system possible, among other skills....but that doesn't really matter too much for this series of novellas except as background.

Instead, what matters is that this series features Josh Glassman, cyborg casanova extraordinaire, as he goes on an adventure with a girl and gets married (temporarily) at the end of each book.  Spangler describes the series as her "Joshsmut" series, although honestly there's only one sex scene included here, and it's not THAT out there.  But what is here is a fun adventure, even if you have no familiarity with Spangler's webcomic or the rest of this series, which will work for a breezy read if you are looking for that.

Plot Summary:  Josh Glassman and Mare Murphy have an open relationship - the two always find themselves back together for both mindblowing sex and comfort, as fellow cyborgs of OACET, even as Josh finds himself frequently with other women.  But when Mare gets a call that her pappy - her grandpa, a man known for his skill with a gun and a skill at not being found in the Alaskan wilderness - has gone missing and left a trail of blood in his cabin, Josh finds himself accompanying her back to her home.  And while the result may be another chance at sex and yet another marriage, all that will come second to figuring out the mystery in a way that leaves everyone happy and alive...

Thoughts:  So yeah this is Spangler's NSFW series, which Spangler advertises on twitter as being her outlet for her smutty stories....and yet the story only has one explicit sex scene, which is honestly not as long or deep (pun maybe intended) as I expected.  It's....fine.  But the rest of this novella, which features an adventure into the Alaskan wilderness, illegal poachers, deadly bears, multiple chase sequences and some quick thinking by our hero and Mare to outwit the bad guys - that's all a lot of fun and highly enjoyable.  And this is a short novella, so it doesn't take very long to get in the thick of things.

So yeah, if you want some fun adventure, with one explicit sex scene, that never gets too serious and is just a quick burst of fun?  This might be for you, whether you've read the other novellas or the webcomic or not.
